Why the topper wears first

The topper is closest to your body. It takes the heat, the moisture and most of the pressure, and in doing so protects the bed below. That is its job — and it is also why it wears out before the rest.

That is not a design flaw but a choice. It is cheaper and better to replace one layer that does the heavy lifting than a whole bed that has been spared because of it.

How to tell it is time

Lie on the half of the bed nobody sleeps on, or in the middle. If that feels noticeably firmer than your own spot, your side has been slept in. Also look across the bed from the side in low, raking light: an impression you can see that way won't come back on its own.

Other signs: you roll towards the middle or towards your partner, you wake with a stiff lower back you didn't used to have, or the bed sleeps warmer than it did. None of these proves anything on its own, but together they are a reason to have it looked at.

What to choose

You can choose the same topper again, but it is also the moment to ask whether it still suits you. A body changes in ten years; someone who chose a soft topper back then may now want more support, or the other way round.

If in doubt, try first. A different topper changes the feel of the same bed more than most people expect — and you notice that better in a night than in ten minutes.

What a new topper won't fix

If the wear is in the bed itself — the top section or the base — a new topper only partly helps. Have your dealer assess it before you order. If it concerns the construction, the warranty is the first conversation, not the topper.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Hästens topper last?

It depends on how intensively the bed is used and how faithfully the care schedule has been followed, so a fixed number of years can't be given. Watch for the signs: an impression that stays, and one half that is clearly softer than the other.

Can I put another brand's topper on my Hästens?

Technically yes, but it changes the feel of the bed, and size and fastening are designed to match. If you want the original feel back, choose a Hästens topper.

Is a worn topper covered by the warranty?

Generally not: gradually becoming softer counts as wear, not as a defect. Check what your own warranty document says for your model, and ask your dealer.
