First the bed, then the pillow

Hästens starts with the bed. If a bed is too firm, people often compensate with a higher pillow — and a pillow that is too high pushes head and neck out of line with the back. Choosing a pillow before the bed is settled is therefore the wrong order.

The goal is simple: head, neck and back in one straight line, whether you lie on your back or your side.

One, and low

For sleeping, Hästens advises one low pillow per person; in a bed that fits, some people need none at all. How high it should be depends mainly on your shoulders: broad-shouldered side sleepers need more height to keep the neck straight.

The recommended size for sleeping is 50 by 60 centimetres: big enough, and not so big that it gets in the way when you turn. The 60 by 80 size is meant for sitting up to read.

The filling per pillow

Hästens sleeping pillows are filled with down and feathers in a cotton cover. More down means softer; more feathers mean more structure. According to the catalogue: 2000T pillow 90% goose down and 10% goose feathers; Herlewing 90% duck down and 10% duck feathers; Eala 80/20; Superia 70/30; Maranga 50/50; Excel 30/70; Marquis 15% down and 85% feathers.

A pillow with the same name as your bed is not automatically the one for you. Hästens says so itself: it depends on your head, your height and how you lie.

Frequently asked questions

Which size of Hästens pillow is best for sleeping?

Hästens recommends 50 by 60 centimetres for sleeping. The larger 60 by 80 size is meant for sitting up to read.

Why does Hästens recommend such a low pillow?

Because a pillow that is too high pushes head and neck out of line with the back. In a bed that supports well, a low pillow is often enough — or sometimes none.

Is there synthetic filling in a Hästens pillow?

No. According to Hästens, the pillows contain only down and feathers, in a 100% cotton cover.
